1874/3 Half Dollar Octagonal Indian. BG-943 High Rarity 4. PCGS graded MS-62. Lovely gold toning with prooflike fields. Lot 2035
"1868" Half Dollar Octagonal Indian. BG-960 Rarity 6. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely golden toning with prooflike surfaces. "Written" date. CAL still visible, though an attempt was made to remove it from the die. Compare with BG-961 "1868" where CAL no longer appears. The BG-960 "1868" is from a small group of very rare backdated issues. According to Breen-Gillio, die state evidence establishes the actual emission sequence as 953, 958, 959, 954, 962, 960, 961, 956, 957, 955, and 963. This means that the 1874 written date coins came between 1876 and 1880, and that the "1852" and "1868" coins without CAL were made in 1880-1, whereas those from the reverse with CAL effaced were made in 1881 or later. "All are very rare." Pop 7; 4 finer in 65 (PCGS # 10818) .
Estimated Value $600 - 700.
